    Hackberry

    Hackberry  is a large, fast growing shade tree.  It establishes easily and grows well in a wide range of soils.  This native tree is  tolerant of heat, drought, salt spray, wind, ice, poor soils as well as sites with short-term flooding.

    The bark of hackberry provides year-round interest in landscapes. The fruit is a popular food for birds and small mammalian wildlife. Much of the fruit remains on the tree throughout winter until it is eaten by birds or other wildlife.

  • American plum blooms are fragrant,  white in early spring. The red to apricot-colored plums ripen over the summer with yellow pulp. The fruits are about 1” in diameter and are edible and often used in jams and jellies. The 3” oblong, serrated leaves turn yellow to orange in the fall and the thorny, steel-gray branches and twigs are quite attractive in the winter.  American plum is a very important wildlife plant and is most commonly used in windbreaks and conservation plantings.     This is really a nice shrub to have around for the wildlife benefits, beauty, and culinary uses. In Spring, Spicebush stands out in the forest with yellow flowers. During Summer, this plant attracts Spricebush Swallowtail butterflies/caterpillars.  Late Summer - early Fall, female plants produce peppery-tasting berries that be eaten as a snack or saved for later use.  A tea can be made from the aromatic leaves and twigs, and the dried and powdered fruit can be used as a spice.
