Excellent native shrub known for attracting wildlife, providing food (berries for birds, deer and other mammals, nectar for pollinators), shelter, and nesting sites, with its flowers, colorful fall foliage, and persistent berries offering multi-season benefits. White flowers in spring, dark berries in summer/fall, and vibrant red/orange foliage in autumn. Tolerates wet locations well as well as drier. Performs best in sunny locations.
The high-antioxidant fruit is also used in baking and to make jams, jellies, syrup, tea, juice and wine. Fruit can persist into winter and serves as a food source for birds and other wildlife.
